Something
wrong?
There is something wrong here. Athena (Mentor, the priest) terrified the pursuers who then dropped their arms and turned to the city, and then Odysseus swept on them? This doesn't fit here.

Zeus, unknown
Unbelievable, this can't be true. A lighting strike at the feet of Athena (Mentor) by Zeus, impossible!
We must find out what is happening here.
Then much-enduring godlike Odysseus cried out terribly as he gathered himself together and swept on them like a high-flying eagle.

And then the son of Kronos threw down his flaming bolt of thunder, and it fell at the feet of the flashing-eyed daughter with the mighty father.

Cloud-gathering Zeus then said in reply: "My child, why do you ask and inquire about these matters? Was it not your plan all along? that Odysseus should take vengeance on these men? Do what you want...
Zeus didn't care about how 'Athena' is solving the problem. So, it isn't likely that Zeus would interfere in this situation, but this is not all Zeus said:
... but I will speak as seems right to me. Now that godlike Odysseus has taken his revenge on the suitors, let them swear a solemn oath, and let him be chieftain for all his days.
We already know that it is impossible that Odysseus would rule again over Ithaca and the Kefallinians. So this can imply only one thing: Since Telemachos is taking over power, this is Odysseus's last day as a chieftain.
Odysseus will die today!
INDEX
So, what really happened here was not revealed. Somehow this ending was undesirable, but what can be so undesirable to not reveal it? It must have been something controversial.
Why must he 'gather' himself? That is what a person would do if things get scary and terrifying for that person itself, but sweep like an eagle over fleeing pursuers isn't.
Or since we know that Odysseus probably survided this ordeal, he is to be chieftain somewhere else. So he is to die, or he is to live elsewhere, like the Pharmakos is.
So, Odysseus is the Pharmakos! He is taking 'the leap'!
Athena asked Zeus about it before the confrontation:
