The Odyssey is full of information about winds, directions, mountains, rivers, cities, caves, ships, people and countries, but where to look for the city of Ithaca, Odysseus' palace, the mountains Neriton and Neion, the caves and harbours mentioned, is still unknown. This was our original goal when we set off in 2009, but then mysterious Doulichion caught our attention.
So, now that we've established the constellation of the islands and the location of the ancient island Ithaca, we can pick up where we left off and search for possible sites on the island to see if we can find evidence for our hypothesis that Lefkada is ancient Ithaca. Back in 2009 and in 2013 we had a look around Lefkada.
Let's get started by putting some facts together and see if we can match features of the landscape to Homer's locations. First we will try to find out where the mountains Neriton and Neion, the city harbour and the harbour of Phorkys might have been. A good place to start that search is the story of Mentes, a trader in iron and copper.
